Report: 2008 LSU Spring Game
Apr 5th, 2008 by gtull1
Yes, we went to the 2008 LSU spring game. It was a blast. I can’t tell you how good it was to see some football again. It’s been about three months since we saw the Tigers DESTROY Ohio State in the BCS national championship game. We sure were excited to see some LSU football again. Let’s break this report of the 2008 LSU spring game up so that we don’t get too confused.
Tailgating
We went to a fish fry in Crowley this morning, and then we came back to Tiger Stadium for some tailgating at around 3:00. Alec’s friend had a birthday party, and his friend’s parents were cool enough to make the party at LSU. How smart was that? We had plenty of food at the tailgating party, and the kids placed some tackle football (without any protection, of course) while the parents ate, drank, and talked. Around 4:30 we started making our way into Tiger Stadium.
The Crowd At Tiger Stadium
The crowd at Tiger Stadium for the LSU spring game was better than we expected. We’re not sure what the final figures were, but our guess is that there may have been around 35,000 fans that showed up for the Tigers. When the Golden Band From Tiger Land started playing for us, the crowd did go a little nuts. I still get chills when I hear the fight song. For most of the football game, the crowd was fairly quiet, but we did get rowdy a few times.
The Weather
The weather in Baton Rouge could not have possibly been any better. It was FANTASTIC! We’re guessing that it was around sixty degrees when the game started. Why can’t the weather stay like this forever in Louisiana? Within a month we will be hiding from ninety degree plus heat, and you already know how bad that is going to be. Today couldn’t have been any better though, and we were very grateful.
LSU’s New Athletic Director
Before the 2008 LSU spring game started, they announced LSU’s new athletic director. The man that will be replacing the retired Skip Bertman is Joe Alleva. He is a graduate of Lee High right here in Baton Rouge. He had been with Duke forever, and he was their athletic director since 1998. From what we’ve gathered so far, he seems to be really good. The word on the street is that he’s a talented fundraiser, and that’s probably 75% of the athletic director’s job.
Ryan Perrilloux Did Not Play
Yes, Ryan Perrilloux did not quarterback the Tigers during the spring game. I’m sick of talking about it, but we all already know that the idiot has been suspended for being an idiot. The word is that he will return to the LSU football team in full tomorrow (Sunday, 4/6/08). Since Ryan Perrilloux didn’t quarterback, Jarrett Lee and Andrew Hatch got plenty of playing time. Maybe that’s a good thing.
The Game
LSU was split into the purple team and the gold team. The purple team wore the purple jerseys (duh), and the gold team wore the white ones. The quarterbacks and kickers wore green jerseys.
As you probably already know, the spring game is designed to make sure that nobody gets hurt. Whenever the quarterback is just touched, the refs call it a sack. In the kickoff, just touching the receiving player will cause the play to be over with. Whenever they kick a field goal, the lines do not move. As far as we could tell, no Tiger got hurt at the spring game.
The game was a blast to watch, but the worst part of it was the kicking. I swear that I could kick the football with one toe further than most of the punts. It was very weak! It was so bad that the crowd actually cheered when one punt was just decent.
The quarterbacks looked pretty good. They were a bit sloppy, and its hard to really get the whole picture in a practice like this, but they seemed fairly good. Andrew Hatch did seem to try to run a little too often, but who are we to complain?
The highlight of the 2008 LSU spring game was probably the run by Richard Murphy. He had a very nice run of about 70 yards to score a touchdown, and he blew past several players to make it. Ricky Jean Francois also had quite a few huge tackles. A lot of players made great plays, but it was sort of hard to keep up with who was who because of our seats and the weird colors.
Game Pictures
We took a lot of pictures of the Tigers during the spring game. We will try to load them up and show them here tonight or tomorrow. It’s been a long day, and we are so tired, so it may wait until tomorrow. A few of the pics are really good ones that show a lot of action, so you may want to check in tomorrow to see them.
Finale
We had a lot of fun at Tiger Stadium. Did you make it to the game? If so, what did you think? If not, did we leave anything out that you would like to hear?
GEAUX TIGERS!!
